One of the most asked question which I get is “What happens when you eat out?” and in all honestly it can be slightly restrictive. I am fortunate that my family and friends are considerate, so will always opt for restaurants which have gluten-free and vegan options. However, I have found myself going for dinners at places where I can literally eat nothing on the menu. This can be frustrating and definitely make eating out a less-enjoyable experience. So, here are my top tips for how to not end up in these situations and how to deal with them if you do.
- Do your research! I can’t stress this enough and it has actually been fun finding small, off-the-track restaurants which I would have never come across before. The internet is a great place to start and by simply typing vegan or gluten free restaurants into your search bar, you can find a wealth of options. There are also apps which are updated with suitable restaurants in your area. My favourite is Happy Cow.
- Phone in advance! If you find your friends or family have booked a table somewhere you have never been, give them a call. Quite often I have found the menus online lack information but staff are always happy to advice and it prevents ‘awkward’ conversations at the table.
- Ask the waiter! When you’re in a restaurant and there is literally nothing on the menu that you can eat, just ask. This has happened to me a couple of times and each time the chef has been happy to adapt a meal on the menu which I fancy.
Happy eating!
